As Oiwa learns of the affair and sinks into despair, unseen forces conspire to remove her from Iemon’s path — poisoning her so he may marry into status and comfort.
 
Death, however, is not the end. Oiwa returns as a grotesquely disfigured ghost, haunting Iemon and those responsible for her suffering. Her presence transforms guilt into terror, as love curdles into punishment and vengeance becomes inevitable. Rather than relying on sudden shocks, the film builds dread through psychological torment and tragic inevitability.
 
Directed by Kenji Misumi and written by Fuji Yahiro, The Ghost of Yotsuya stands apart for its operatic emotional weight and haunting restraint. Hasegawa’s performance — adapted from his celebrated Kabuki portrayal — grounds the supernatural horror in profound human weakness, while the film’s imagery left an indelible mark on later J-horror masters.
