The Threat Blu-ray brings to home video a tense and unsettling early crime drama from Kinji Fukasaku, arriving for the first time ever outside Japan. Often compared to High and Low for its moral pressure-cooker setup, the film captures a moment in postwar Japan where prosperity and stability prove far more fragile than they appear.

Misawa, a successful advertising executive, seems to embody the promise of Japan’s economic resurgence. He owns a modern home, supports his family comfortably, and enjoys the respect of his peers. That carefully constructed life begins to unravel when two escaped convicts force their way into his house, demanding shelter and cooperation. Trapped between fear, responsibility, and self-preservation, Misawa is pushed into a psychological standoff that exposes the cracks beneath his respectable exterior.

Directed by Kinji Fukasaku, years before his international breakthroughs, The Threat already displays the filmmaker’s fascination with social systems under stress and individuals crushed between authority and survival. Rentarō Mikuni delivers a restrained, increasingly desperate performance, while the film’s tight runtime and claustrophobic setting heighten the sense of moral suffocation. Rather than relying on spectacle, Fukasaku builds tension through character, pacing, and the slow erosion of certainty.

This limited edition Blu-ray from Arrow Video presents the film in a new high-definition transfer, accompanied by thoughtful critical extras that contextualize its place within Japanese cinema and Fukasaku’s career.
