Tomie Blu-ray brings the original live-action adaptation of Junji Itō’s infamous manga to high definition for the first time outside Japan, marking a foundational entry in the late-1990s J-horror boom. Directed by Ataru Oikawa, the film translates Itō’s unsettling themes of obsession, repetition, and bodily horror into a chilling supernatural mystery that helped pave the way for the genre’s international explosion.

Photography student Tsukiko struggles with violent dreams and fragmented memories tied to a traumatic event in her youth. As her psychiatrist attempts to unlock the truth, a parallel police investigation uncovers a disturbing pattern: a series of murdered schoolgirls spanning decades, all bearing the same name—Tomie Kawakami—and all killed by lovers driven to madness. As these threads converge, Tsukiko finds herself drawn into a horrifying cycle of seduction, jealousy, and rebirth that refuses to stay buried.

Anchored by a coldly hypnotic performance from Miho Kanno as the enigmatic Tomie, the film blends psychological unease with grotesque imagery and slow-burn dread. Tomie stands as a key bridge between manga horror and cinematic J-horror, spawning an entire franchise while retaining a uniquely intimate, unsettling tone.

This limited edition Blu-ray from Arrow Video presents the film in a new high-definition transfer with newly produced interviews and extras exploring its legacy, production, and enduring cult status.
