Written by Lo Wei and directed by Teddy Yip, The Eunuch is a dark wuxia pian centred on the ruthless court eunuch Gui De-hai. After surviving an assassination attempt ordered by the Emperor, Gui responds with merciless brutality, slaughtering the imperial family in cold blood. When he discovers that the Emperor’s son has escaped, his quest for revenge continues, transforming the film into a chilling meditation on power, obsession, and unchecked vengeance within a decaying imperial system.
 
The Deadly Knives shifts the focus to contemporary kung fu drama, starring Ching Li and Ling Yun as young lovers whose lives are torn apart by corruption and violence. When Japanese thugs threaten Yan Zi-fei’s family, he is driven to avenge their honour, even if it means turning against the corrupt father of the woman he loves. Blending romance, nationalism, and martial arts action, the film reflects the genre’s evolving priorities as kung fu cinema surged into prominence.
 
Together, these films provide a revealing snapshot of Shaw Brothers Studio at a crossroads, reworking the timeless revenge narrative across two distinct genres.
