Finis Terrae Blu-ray presents one of the defining works of French silent cinema from visionary filmmaker Jean Epstein, a cornerstone of the French Impressionist movement and an early master of poetic realism. Shot entirely on location along the rugged Finistère coast of Brittany, this stark maritime drama captures both the elemental beauty of the sea and the psychological strain of isolation with extraordinary intensity.

Four fishermen travel to the remote islet of Bannec to harvest seaweed, a dangerous but lucrative trade that requires months of isolation and brutal labour. As weeks pass, tensions rise. A drunken argument leads to injury, suspicion, and paranoia, while worsening weather traps the men offshore, cutting them off from rescue or escape. What begins as a working expedition slowly curdles into a study of fear, mistrust, and human fragility against an indifferent natural world.

Often cited as a key precursor to films such as The Lighthouse and Bait, Finis Terrae is remarkable for its immersive realism and for Epstein’s groundbreaking use of slow-motion cinematography, which transforms crashing waves, labouring bodies, and small gestures into moments of hypnotic intensity. Restored in stunning detail from a 4K scan by Gaumont Film Company, this edition honours Epstein’s Breton cycle with a definitive presentation for modern audiences.
