The Shaw Brothers: Basher Box Blu-ray brings together three influential martial arts classics from the early days of the kung fu boom that transformed Hong Kong cinema in the 1970s. Known to Western audiences as “bashers” for their emphasis on intense hand-to-hand combat, these films helped establish kung fu cinema as a global phenomenon.

Produced by Shaw Brothers Studio at their legendary Movietown complex in Hong Kong, these films combine spectacular widescreen production values with the work of some of the genre’s most influential directors and stars.

The collection begins with King Boxer (1972), directed by Chung Chang-wha. A massive international success, the film helped launch the worldwide kung fu craze and became one of the first martial arts films to break through with Western audiences under the alternate title Five Fingers of Death.

Chang Cheh, one of Shaw Brothers’ most prolific and influential directors, contributes two of the set’s films. The Boxer from Shantung delivers a gritty revenge story set within the violent world of Shanghai crime gangs, while Chinatown Kid follows a naive young martial artist who travels to San Francisco only to become entangled in the city’s brutal underworld.

Packed with raw action, revenge-driven storytelling and memorable performances from some of Shaw Brothers’ biggest stars, these films represent key entries in the rise of martial arts cinema.
