The Iron-Fisted Monk Blu-ray presents the explosive directorial debut of Sammo Hung, a landmark 1977 kung fu film that helped usher in the modern era of Hong Kong action cinema. Combining traditional Shaolin mythology with a new level of physical intensity and realism, the film stands as one of the most influential martial arts productions of its time.

Set during the Qing dynasty, the story follows Rice Miller Luk, a humble villager whose life is upended when Manchu Bannermen murder his uncle. After being rescued by the Shaolin monk San De, Luk is offered martial arts training at the Shaolin Temple. Impatient and undisciplined, he abandons his studies early, only to return home and discover his town now controlled by an even more brutal Manchu regime led by a sadistic official. Forced to rely on incomplete training, instinct, and sheer resolve, Luk confronts the occupiers in a violent struggle for justice.

Predating The 36th Chamber of Shaolin by a full year, The Iron-Fisted Monk offers an earlier and more ferocious interpretation of the San De and Miller Luk legend. Its uncensored version later received a retroactive Category III rating in Hong Kong, underscoring the film’s raw brutality and uncompromising tone. Widely regarded as one of the first modern kung fu films, it marks the emergence of Sammo Hung as a defining creative force behind a new generation of martial arts cinema.
