Adapted from the internationally renowned novel by Akiyuki Nosaka (Grave of the Fireflies), the film follows Subuyan, a former Buddhist monk who now makes a living producing underground erotic films. Living with hairdresser Haru and her two teenage children, Subuyan attempts to juggle his secretive filmmaking operation while avoiding the attention of the yakuza.
 
His fragile world begins to unravel when his increasingly obsessive desires threaten the stability of the household, exposing the hypocrisy, corruption and moral contradictions lurking beneath Japan’s economic boom.
 
A landmark work from one of Japan’s most daring filmmakers, The Pornographers blends biting social commentary with Imamura’s signature dark humour to explore the hidden impulses of modern life.
