Siege Blu-ray presents one of the most harrowing and politically charged Canadian shockers of the 1980s, inspired by the real-life 42-day Halifax police strike. Directed by Paul Donovan and Maura O’Connell, the film begins with a brutal act of right-wing violence at a gay bar, forcing the sole survivor to seek refuge in a nearby apartment building. What follows is a claustrophobic, escalating siege as the residents—abandoned by law enforcement—must decide whether to unite or perish in the face of hate-fueled terror.

Released in the U.S. under the title Self Defense, Siege blends gritty realism with siege-thriller intensity, grounding its violence in social collapse rather than spectacle. Featuring strong performances from Doug Lennox, Tom Nardini, Jack Blum, and My Bloody Valentine’s Keith Knight, the film remains deeply unsettling decades later, its themes of extremism and communal fear feeling uncomfortably current. This edition from Severin Films is scanned in 2K from the original negative, recently uncovered in a Nova Scotia archive, restoring a long-buried cult classic to its full, raw power.
