Barge worker Billy convinces his best friend Eddie to join him on a winter road trip to visit his pregnant girlfriend Patti. While Billy and Eddie spend much of the trip exchanging crude observations and misguided opinions, Patti ultimately proves far wiser and more grounded than either man expects.
