I vampiri Blu-ray presents Riccardo Freda’s gothic milestone, widely regarded as Italy’s first horror film. Blending the legends of Elizabeth Báthory and Frankenstein, the story follows a mad scientist who abducts young women in Paris, draining their blood to sustain an ageing duchess. Made at breakneck speed as a directorial challenge by Freda, the film was completed in part by cinematographer Mario Bava, whose visual flair would soon define Italian horror.
 
With its baroque atmosphere, shadow-drenched imagery and macabre romanticism, I vampiri forged the path for an entire wave of Italian gothic cinema and remains a crucial early chapter in the genre’s history.
