The Bounty Hunter Trilogy Blu-ray showcases three ferocious samurai action films starring Tomisaburô Wakayama, made just before his iconic turn in Lone Wolf and Cub. Drawing inspiration from James Bond spy thrillers and Spaghetti Westerns while retaining the blood-soaked intensity of late-1960s Japanese genre cinema, these films present a uniquely hybrid take on the chanbara action film.

In Shigehiro Ozawa’s Killer’s Mission, Wakayama stars as Shikoro Ichibei, a wandering doctor and covert spy-for-hire tasked with stopping the illegal sale of firearms to a hostile shogun. Gadgets, disguises, and brutal swordplay collide as espionage and period action merge into a relentless revenge thriller. Eiichi Kudo’s follow-up, The Fort of Death, shifts toward ensemble action, with Ichibei hired to protect a village of farmers from a tyrannical lord in a mission that echoes the structure of Seven Samurai while maintaining the series’ pulp edge.

Ozawa returns to close the trilogy with Eight Men to Kill, the most flamboyant entry of the three. This time, Ichibei is hired to recover stolen gold from a government mine, supported by a colourful team of fellow spies, ronin, and female ninjas. Loaded with inventive weaponry, elaborate set pieces, and escalating violence, the film fully embraces the series’ blend of samurai cinema and spy spectacle.

Together, the three films form a vital precursor to Wakayama’s later legendary roles, capturing a transitional moment in Japanese action cinema where tradition collided with global genre influence. Radiance presents the trilogy on Blu-ray for the first time, newly transferred and accompanied by expert contextual extras.
