The Shaw Brothers: Chang Cheh Blu-ray collects four essential martial arts classics from one of the most influential directors in Hong Kong cinema. By the early 1970s, Chang Cheh had already become Shaw Brothers Studio’s most prolific and successful filmmaker, known for his heroic storytelling, stylized violence, and ability to launch the careers of rising martial arts stars.

This collection highlights two major phases of Chang Cheh’s legendary career. The first pair of films — Five Shaolin Masters and Shaolin Temple — form part of his celebrated “Shaolin Temple Cycle,” inspired by historical legends of Shaolin fighters resisting the invading Qing forces. Featuring stars David Chiang, Ti Lung, and Alexander Fu Sheng, these films helped define the golden age of Shaw Brothers martial arts cinema.

The second half of the set showcases Chang Cheh’s work with the iconic Venom Mob, the troupe of martial arts performers who would become cult legends among kung fu fans. Their talents are on full display in The Five Venoms and Crippled Avengers, two kinetic and inventive action films that have influenced generations of filmmakers and helped inspire the heroic bloodshed genre later popularized by John Woo.

Blood-soaked, stylish, and endlessly influential, these four films represent Chang Cheh at the height of his creative powers and remain essential viewing for martial arts cinema fans.
