Produced between the 1960s and 1970s, these vibrant Märchenfilme reinterpret classic fairy tales through the lens of East German fantasy filmmaking, combining elaborate sets, theatrical performances and striking colour palettes with timeless moral storytelling. From terrifying wolves and underground magical kingdoms to psychedelic devil lairs and enchanted forests, the collection showcases DEFA’s uniquely dreamlike approach to fantasy cinema.
 
The set includes Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Mother Hulda, The Devil’s Three Golden Hairs and Snow White and Rose Red — five visually inventive fairy tale adaptations that stand alongside the surreal children’s television and fantasy films of the era while carving out a style entirely their own.
