Blending ghost story romance, martial arts action, comedy and eerie fantasy, the film follows a hapless tax collector who takes shelter in an abandoned temple haunted by dangerous spirits.

There, he encounters a beautiful ghost whose spirit is enslaved by an ancient tree demon. As danger closes in around them, the unlikely pair risk everything in a desperate attempt to escape the demon’s control and find peace together.

Directed by Ching Siu-tung and starring Leslie Cheung, Joey Wong and Wu Ma, A Chinese Ghost Story remains one of the defining Hong Kong fantasy films of the 1980s. This release includes a 4K scan from the original camera negative restored by Shout!
