Determined to strike back, she joins American expatriate Tony Fenner and a group of underground revolutionaries planning an audacious assassination attempt. Their scheme involves tunnelling beneath a cemetery and planting a bomb intended to eliminate the country’s leadership in a single strike.
 
Inspired by a real plot against Cuban dictator Gerardo Machado, We Were Strangers was financed through Huston’s own Horizon Pictures and arrived during a politically charged period in Hollywood.
