Produced by Stanley Kramer, the film is an unflinching postwar drama about injury, isolation and the difficult process of rebuilding a life.
 
Ken Wilocek is a young infantry lieutenant left paralysed from the waist down by a sniper’s bullet during the final days of World War II. Bitter and withdrawn in the paraplegic ward of a veterans’ hospital, Ken refuses to see his devoted fiancée Ellen and struggles to imagine a future beyond his injuries.
 
With the help of a direct, compassionate doctor and the other veterans around him, Ken slowly begins confronting the emotional and physical realities of his new life. Teresa Wright, Everett Sloane and Jack Webb co-star alongside Brando, while numerous real paraplegic veterans appear in the film. Brando famously spent a month living in the hospital ward where filming later took place while preparing for the role.
