Directed by Claude Faraldo, Themroc is a taboo-busting satire made on a shoestring budget and famously constructed with no intelligible dialogue. Stripping language away entirely, the film uses physicality, sound, and grotesque humour to eviscerate postwar labour culture, gender roles, and bourgeois morality. Piccoli’s transformation from obedient worker to feral urban caveman becomes both absurd comedy and savage political provocation.

Long unavailable on home video in the United States, Themroc stands as both a reaction to the post-1968 protest movements and a precursor to later strands of French extreme cinema.
