The Shootist Blu-ray presents the final screen appearance of John Wayne in a moving and elegiac Western directed by Don Siegel. Adapted from Glendon Swarthout’s novel, the film follows legendary gunfighter John Bernard Books as he confronts both terminal illness and the violent legacy he can no longer escape. Set in 1901, at the fading edge of the Old West, the story becomes a meditation on reputation, mortality, and choosing how one meets the end.

As word spreads that Books is dying of cancer, opportunists, enemies, and onlookers begin to circle, eager to witness the fall of a living legend. Refusing to fade away quietly, Books resolves to face death on his own terms, selecting his executioners and preparing for one final stand. Wayne’s performance is restrained, reflective, and deeply personal, lending the film a sense of finality that resonates far beyond the genre.

Featuring an exceptional supporting cast including James Stewart, Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard, Scatman Crothers, and John Carradine, The Shootist stands as both a farewell to one of cinema’s most enduring stars and a poignant closing chapter for the classical Western itself.
