Tasked with remaking a 1963 film adapted from a Shanghainese play, Chor Yuen insisted on staging his version in Cantonese, helping reconnect with local audiences and reshape the Hong Kong film market. The result became the highest-grossing Hong Kong film of 1973, even outpacing Enter the Dragon.
 
Remembered for its ensemble cast, lively set-bound staging, star cameos and influence on later Hong Kong comedy, The House of 72 Tenants remains a key Shaw Brothers title and an important moment in the revival of Cantonese-language cinema.
