The Ceremony Blu-ray presents Nagisa Oshima’s 1971 film in a Standard Edition UK import release from Radiance Films. After receiving a telegram from their cousin announcing the sender’s own death, Masuo and Ritsuko travel to his house to confirm what has happened.
 
The journey draws Masuo back into memories of his traditional, patriarchal family and its long history of arranged marriages, obligation and control. Having abandoned his dream of becoming a baseball player to meet his family’s expectations, Masuo begins to recognize that his growing feelings for Ritsuko may be trapped within the same suffocating structure.
 
Elegant, controlled and deeply critical, The Ceremony examines the oppressive weight of tradition on younger generations in postwar Japan. Drawing on the visual language of Golden Age Japanese cinema while reshaping it through Oshima’s own political and emotional intensity, this Region Free Blu-ray edition features a new 4K restoration from the original negative, uncompressed mono PCM audio, newly improved English subtitle translation and new extras.
