Diary of a Shinjuku Thief Blu-ray presents Nagisa Oshima’s 1969 film in a Standard Edition UK import release from Radiance Films. Set around Tokyo’s Shinjuku district, the film follows a compulsive book thief whose routine is disrupted when a young woman pretending to be a bookstore clerk catches him in the act.
 
What begins as confrontation develops into a strange, escalating relationship, as the pair challenge each other to undertake increasingly risky thefts. Guided by a seemingly omniscient bookstore owner, they are drawn into absurdist performances that blur rebellion, desire, identity and political theatre.
 
Shot on real locations in Shinjuku and incorporating footage from actual street protests, Diary of a Shinjuku Thief captures the energy of Japan’s 1960s counterculture. Combining Godardian free-form cinema, underground theatre and documentary elements, this Region Free Blu-ray edition features a new 4K restoration from the original negative, uncompressed mono PCM audio, newly improved English subtitle translation and new extras.
