After the massive success of the original Battles Without Honor and Humanity series, Toei Studios convinced Fukasaku to return with three new crime films starring Bunta Sugawara, each presenting a standalone story set in different corners of Japan’s criminal underworld.
 
While not direct continuations of the original series, these films expand the brutal realism and political intrigue that defined Fukasaku’s revolutionary approach to the yakuza genre.

In the first film, Sugawara plays Miyoshi, a low-level assassin caught in a power struggle within the Yamamori gang after a botched hit lands him in prison. The Boss’s Head follows a wandering gambler who takes the blame for a failed assassination and seeks revenge when the gang he protected betrays him. In Last Days of the Boss, Sugawara portrays a loyal laborer who rises within a crime family after his mentor is murdered, only to discover the politics of the underworld leave little room for justice.
 
Blending violent action, political maneuvering and morally complex characters, the trilogy represents a crucial bridge between Fukasaku’s groundbreaking early yakuza films and his later career.
