Negatives Blu-ray marks the worldwide Blu-ray premiere of Peter Medak’s provocative and deeply unsettling feature debut, a landmark of late-1960s British psychodrama that announced the arrival of a singular directorial voice. Shot at the height of the era’s sexual and social upheaval, the film dismantles power, desire, and performance with an icy, confrontational gaze that still feels dangerous decades later.

When a young couple — played by Peter McEnery and Glenda Jackson in her film debut — grow restless with their private games of domination and fantasy, they invite an uninhibited photographer (Diane Cilento) into their relationship. What begins as erotic experimentation quickly turns corrosive, exposing emotional cruelty, voyeurism, and the fragile illusions that bind the trio together. Medak stages the drama with stark intimacy, allowing tension to fester until the film becomes less about seduction than psychological disintegration.

Newly scanned in 4K from the original camera negative by the British Film Institute, Negatives Blu-ray presents the film in its most definitive form to date. Also included is a bonus disc featuring Joan Littlewood’s vibrant 1963 comedy Sparrows Can’t Sing — assistant directed by Medak — offering a fascinating counterpoint that traces his roots in British social realism before his turn toward darker, more transgressive material.
