Radical Japan: Survival and Desire (UK) 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray presents six early films by Shohei Imamura in a limited edition box set from Radiance. The second instalment in the Radical Japan series focuses on one of Japanese cinema’s great iconoclasts, bringing together Imamura’s rarely seen first three features alongside three major classics newly restored in 4K.

FILMS INCLUDED

Stolen Desire (1958)

Imamura’s debut feature follows a travelling theatre troupe, introducing his interest in performance, social margins and earthy human behaviour.

Nishi Ginza Station (1958)

A playful musical comedy about infidelity, desire and fantasy, showing Imamura experimenting with tone and genre early in his career.

Endless Desire (1958)

A group of former soldiers dig for hidden wartime loot, setting greed, memory and postwar disillusionment against one another.

Pigs and Battleships (1961)

A vivid portrait of life around a U.S. naval base, blending crime, corruption and black comedy in one of Imamura’s breakthrough works.

The Insect Woman (1963)

A defining Imamura portrait of female resilience, following a woman’s survival through shifting social and economic circumstances in modern Japan.

Intentions of Murder (1964)

An expansive drama of trauma, desire and endurance, continuing Imamura’s complex exploration of women, social pressure and survival.

A major collection of Shohei Imamura’s early cinema, Radical Japan: Survival and Desire captures the director’s fascination with class, sexuality, survival, postwar Japan and people living outside polite society. This limited edition box set includes 4K restorations of Pigs and Battleships, The Insect Woman and Intentions of Murder, high-definition transfers of Stolen Desire, Nishi Ginza Station and Endless Desire, extensive scholarly extras, reversible sleeves, 120-page book and rigid box packaging.
