North Sea Is Death Sea Blu-ray brings one of the defining films of 1970s German New Wave to disc for the first time in North America. Directed by Hark Bohm, co-founder of Filmverlag der Autoren alongside Wim Wenders and Rainer Werner Fassbinder, this raw coming-of-age drama captures youth alienation with startling immediacy.
Thirteen-year-old Uwe (Uwe Bohm, in a widely acclaimed screen debut) lives in a bleak Hamburg housing estate with his mother and abusive alcoholic father. Trapped in cycles of violence and boredom, Uwe targets a quiet Asian classmate (Dschingis Bowakow) — until he discovers the boy has secretly built a makeshift raft from scrap wood. What begins in hostility slowly transforms into solidarity, and the two devise a desperate plan to escape their lives by sailing together toward the North Sea.
Often described as a modern-day Huckleberry Finn, North Sea Is Death Sea blends social realism with youthful fantasy, portraying friendship as both refuge and rebellion. Bohm’s unsparing direction, combined with deeply natural performances from his adopted sons, creates a film that feels lived-in, dangerous, and painfully honest — so much so that German ratings authorities once attempted to restrict young audiences from seeing it.
This North American Blu-ray debut features a new 4K scan from the original camera negative, extensive special features, and a substantial booklet documenting the film’s legacy and cultural impact.
