Based on the story of Carl Panzram, the film stars James Woods as a deeply troubled inmate serving time at Leavenworth, where he forms an unlikely connection with young prison guard Henry Lesser, played by Robert Sean Leonard.
 
Lesser believes in reform and gives Panzram writing materials so he can record his life story. What emerges is a disturbing account of violence, guilt and self-loathing, forcing difficult questions about punishment, redemption and whether some people are truly beyond saving.
