When he crosses paths with Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and young Enola (Tina Majorino) — who carries a map to the mythical Dryland tattooed on her back — he becomes the target of the Smokers, a ruthless gang led by the maniacal Deacon (Dennis Hopper). What follows is a sweeping aquatic adventure packed with explosive set pieces, towering practical sets and large-scale stunt work rarely attempted before or since.
