Based on a true story, the film follows elderly Iowa farmer Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth), who sets out on an extraordinary journey across America’s Midwest after learning his estranged brother has suffered a stroke. Unable to drive and determined to make the trip on his own terms, Alvin travels hundreds of miles aboard a small John Deere riding lawn mower.
 
Along the way, Alvin encounters a series of strangers and shares hard-earned wisdom drawn from a lifetime of experience. Through simple conversations and quiet moments of connection, his slow-moving journey becomes a poignant meditation on family, regret, aging and reconciliation.
