The Abandoned 2006 Blu-ray presents Nacho Cerdà’s bleak, atmospheric supernatural horror, a deeply unsettling meditation on identity, trauma, and inherited guilt. Best known for his transgressive short films and later work on The Devil’s Backbone special features, Cerdà delivers a slow-burn descent into dread that relies on mood, isolation, and existential terror rather than shocks.

After receiving a mysterious call from a Russian notary, film producer Marie Jones leaves her life in California and travels to an abandoned farm deep in the Russian wilderness, a place tied to her birth decades earlier. There she encounters Nicolai, a man claiming to be her twin brother, summoned by the same message. As night falls, the decaying house begins to reveal its secrets, trapping the siblings in a nightmarish loop where they are stalked by corpse-like doubles of themselves. With no escape possible, the past resurfaces in grotesque and inescapable ways.

Shot in desaturated, wintry tones and drenched in oppressive silence, The Abandoned evokes the psychological unease of early 2000s European horror while standing apart through its fixation on doppelgängers and self-annihilation. It is a film that lingers long after it ends, unsettling in both its imagery and its implications.
