Shanghai Blues 4K Ultra HD brings Tsui Hark’s exuberant romantic comedy to the format in a newly supervised 4K restoration. Blending wartime melodrama with screwball comedy, the film showcases Hark’s gift for visual invention, kinetic pacing, and heartfelt romance, standing as one of his most joyful and accessible works.

In 1937, as bombing raids erupt during the Second Sino-Japanese War, a soldier and a young woman meet by chance beneath a bridge in the darkness. Unable to see one another, they promise to reunite once the chaos ends. A decade later, the soldier returns to Shanghai as a hopeful songwriter and tuba player, searching for the woman he never forgot. Fate places them in the same apartment building, but misunderstandings and mistaken identities turn his search into a whirlwind of romantic confusion involving her unsuspecting roommate.

A loving homage to classic Hollywood screwball comedies filtered through Hong Kong style, Shanghai Blues delivers rapid-fire slapstick, expressive production design, and buoyant charm. This edition features a 4K restoration supervised by Tsui Hark from the original negative, with newly remixed sound, presented by Film Movement Classics in a limited collector edition.
