River of Grass Blu-ray presents Kelly Reichardt’s remarkably assured debut feature, a wry and understated neo-noir set in the forgotten stretches between Miami and the Everglades. Dissatisfied housewife Cozy (Lisa Bowman) dreams of escape from suburban monotony. When she meets equally restless handyman Lee Ray (Larry Fessenden), a reckless night and an accidentally discharged gun send the pair on the run — or so they believe.
Cleverly subverting crime drama conventions, Reichardt crafts a sharply observed portrait of aimless youth and self-mythologising rebellion. Dryly comic and quietly poignant, River of Grass marked the arrival of one of American independent cinema’s most distinctive voices.
