Fresh Kill Blu-ray is Shu Lea Cheang’s electrifying 1994 debut, a disturbingly prescient ecofeminist parable fused with brain-wave-scrambling cyberpunk fantasia. Set in a dystopian-chic New York where sushi joints and toxic-waste sites coexist, the film follows a lesbian couple (Sarita Choudhury and Erin McMurtry) who turn to the hacker underground after their daughter disappears, uncovering a conspiracy of corporate greenwashing and poisoned food systems.

Swinging between outré satire and agitprop, this director-approved edition from The Criterion Collection feels uncannily prophetic — sounding the alarm on a capitalist system that contaminates waterways, bodies, and even information itself. Fresh Kill remains a radical, urgent call to resistance.
