Carnival in the Night Blu-ray presents Masashi Yamamoto’s explosive underground classic, a raw and confrontational portrait of Tokyo’s punk-era counterculture. Shot in a hypnotic vérité style, the film captures the restless energy of Shinjuku’s underground scene with a fierce sense of rebellion and alienation.
Aspiring punk rocker and single mother Kumi leaves her child with her ex-husband and drifts into the neon-lit night, entering a chaotic world of squatters, addicts and radicals. As she moves through the city’s margins, her journey becomes a hallucinatory spiral of violence, rage and self-discovery. Yamamoto’s unflinching vision transforms the DIY underground of early 1980s Japan into a purgatorial landscape where freedom and destruction exist side by side.
Presented alongside Yamamoto’s earlier feature Saint Terrorism, this release showcases the filmmaker’s uncompromising approach to independent cinema and his influence on later Japanese punk films such as Burst City and Bullet Ballet.
