Bye Bye Love Blu-ray brings Isao Fujisawa’s long-lost 1974 jishu eiga landmark to North America for the first time, newly restored in 2K and presented with a special limited edition slipcover restricted to 1,000 units and available only through our website and select indie retailers. Following nihilistic drifter Utamaro and gender-fluid shoplifter Giko as they flee across Japan after a violent incident, the film becomes a restless road-movie meditation on alienation, free love, and identity in a rapidly shifting society. Alternating between psychedelic detours, sexual encounters, and surreal interludes, Bye Bye Love captures the political and emotional turbulence of 1970s Japan with a confrontational intimacy that feels decades ahead of its time. Bridging influences from Pierrot le fou, Bonnie and Clyde, and Funeral Parade of Roses, Fujisawa’s sole feature stands today as a newly reclaimed cornerstone of Japanese queer cinema, unseen for nearly fifty years before its restoration.
