The Tale Of Oiwa’s Ghost Blu-ray presents one of the most brutal and unsentimental adaptations of the legendary Yotsuya Kaidan, reimagined as a grim tale of ambition, betrayal, and supernatural vengeance. Directed by crime-film specialist Tai Kato, this 1961 classic strips the ghost story of theatrical excess and grounds it in stark moral decay.

When the daughter of a powerful family takes interest in the impoverished samurai Iemon (Tomisaburo Wakayama), he seizes the chance to rise in status — but only if he can eliminate the one thing standing in his way: his devoted wife, Oiwa. After poisoning her and disposing of her body in a nearby swamp, Iemon attempts to move on with his new life. Instead, Oiwa returns as a grotesquely disfigured spirit, haunting him on his wedding night and dragging him toward madness and ruin.

Rather than leaning into stylized horror, The Tale Of Oiwa’s Ghost unfolds like a crime tragedy poisoned by the supernatural. Wakayama delivers an intensely physical performance as a man corroded from within, while Kato’s restrained direction emphasizes guilt, paranoia, and inevitability over shock. The result is a bleak, unforgettable take on one of Japan’s most enduring ghost stories.

This Limited Edition Blu-ray marks the film’s first appearance on the format, featuring a new high-definition transfer, newly created extras, and exclusive packaging.
