Produced by Roger and Julie Corman and adapted from the autobiography Sister of the Road, the film blends Depression-era crime drama with the raw edge of early ’70s exploitation cinema.

Set in the American South during the 1930s, the film follows Bertha Thompson, a restless drifter riding the rails from town to town and leaving trouble behind her. Her path collides with Bill Shelly, a labourer turned union organizer, and together with two companions they embark on a string of robberies that pit them against railroad tycoons and local law enforcement. What begins as a romantic outlaw fantasy steadily darkens into a portrait of violence, repression, and doomed rebellion.

Even at this early stage, Scorsese’s visual instincts are unmistakable, pairing kinetic energy with bruising social realism.
