Boxcar Bertha 4K Ultra HD brings Martin Scorsese’s long-overlooked sophomore feature to the format for the first time worldwide, newly restored under Scorsese’s supervision. Produced by Roger and Julie Corman and adapted from the autobiography Sister of the Road, the film blends Depression-era crime drama with the raw edge of early ’70s exploitation cinema.

Set in the American South during the 1930s, the film follows Bertha Thompson, a restless drifter riding the rails from town to town and leaving trouble behind her. Her path collides with Bill Shelly, a labourer turned union organizer, and together with two companions they embark on a string of robberies that pit them against railroad tycoons and local law enforcement. What begins as a romantic outlaw fantasy steadily darkens into a portrait of violence, repression, and doomed rebellion.

Even at this early stage, Scorsese’s visual instincts are unmistakable, pairing kinetic energy with bruising social realism. Cinématographe, Vinegar Syndrome’s auteur-focused sub-label, presents Boxcar Bertha in a deluxe limited edition MediaBook, finally giving this key early work the recognition and presentation it deserves.
