Timid tax collector Ling Choi-San takes shelter in an abandoned temple, where he meets and falls in love with Nip Siu-Sihn, a ghost trapped under the control of a powerful tree demon. To save her, he must join forces with Taoist warrior Yin Chik-Ha.
 
A Chinese Ghost Story II (1990)
Ling Choi-San becomes caught up with a group of rebels battling supernatural forces while trying to rescue their captured leader. With Yin Chik-Ha returning and swordsman Jihau entering the fight, the sequel expands the original’s mix of romance, comedy, action and ghostly adventure.
 
A Chinese Ghost Story III (1991)
Set 100 years later, the final film follows Fong, a clumsy monk apprentice transporting a golden Buddha statue, who stumbles into the territory of the tree demon and its ghostly followers.
