Isolated and scarred by violence, the orphanage hides dark secrets, including the restless spirit of a murdered boy named Santi, who drifts through its corridors seeking justice. As Carlos uncovers the truth behind Santi’s death, the boundaries between the living and the dead begin to dissolve.

A meditation on innocence lost, memory, and unresolved trauma, The Devil’s Backbone laid the thematic groundwork for much of del Toro’s later work.
