Rosa La Rose, Fille Publique Blu-ray presents Paul Vecchiali’s underseen 1986 drama as a quietly devastating portrait of class, desire, and self-determination on the streets of Paris. Set among the markets and alleyways of Les Halles, the film follows Rosa “la rose” (Marianne Basler), a young sex worker admired by her peers and comfortably protected by her pimp Gilbert (Jean Sorel). For Rosa, life feels carefree and indulgent — until the arrival of her 20th birthday forces her to confront what adulthood may demand of her.

That reckoning begins when Rosa meets Julien (Pierre Cosso), a reserved working-class labourer who sees past her flirtatious exterior and recognises the vulnerability beneath. Their connection destabilises Rosa’s carefully balanced world, pushing her toward questions of independence, dignity, and emotional freedom that clash sharply with the structures surrounding her. Vecchiali approaches these themes with an almost Shakespearean sensitivity, blending romantic idealism with social realism to quietly devastating effect.

Anchored by a remarkable early performance from Marianne Basler, Rosa La Rose, Fille Publique stands as a long-overlooked gem of French cinema. This Limited Edition Blu-ray features a 2K restoration approved by Vecchiali and presents the film with newly improved English subtitles, offering the most complete and authoritative edition to date.
